Summary

Worldwide, Security Organizations and Forces implement video surveillance to monitor and protect property and public infrastructure, driven by various factors such as increasing crime rates, security threats, acts of terrorism, and even police monitoring. The influx of surveillance footage from a growing number of cameras operating at higher resolutions, such as HD, coupled with the desire to increase the retention time of that footage, is amplifying the volume of available images.

Organizations that have invested heavily in surveillance infrastructure are interested in leveraging it for automating surveillance procedures using video analysis solutions.

SURVANT will offer an innovative system that gathers relevant videos from heterogeneous repositories, extracts video analytics, enriches analysis with reasoning and inference technologies, and provides a unified search interface to the user. This interface will be intuitive with a relaxed learning curve, assisting users in creating precise search queries and receiving results using advanced visualization tools. Ethical management of personal data collected from surveillance videos will be integrated into the system design.

SURVANT is the follow-up to the ADVISE research project, co-funded by the EU under the 7th Framework Programme in the SEC-2011 call.
